Worms crawl so slowly ... They're late!

April 12 – Wow! We are having a great time preparing for our vermiculture experience. Unfortunately, our worm shipment was delayed. Fortunately, our worms arrive Monday,
and the fun is ready to start!
We prepared bins for our worms.
This week, we spent time preparing our vermiculture boxes, collecting needed materials, and have started to collect scraps that can safely be used in our composting experience.  I you would like to contribute to our learning, we would love your help!  Our research on composting with worms tells us that the following items would be helpful:

  • fruits and vegetable peels and scraps
  • breads and cereals
  • tea bags
  • coffee grounds and filters
  • crushed egg shells
  • watermelon & pumpkin rind

  • Some things that our research tells us that will not be useful in our experimentation include:
    • meats
    • dairy products
    • citrus fruit & peels
    • oils or fat
Contributions can be made by simple drop offs to the school!  To coordinate, please email Renee Golz at renee.golz@cms.k12.nc.us.

Stay tuned!  Next week is going to be especially exciting!
